LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
LEED is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation and maintenance
of "Green" buildings, homes and neighborhoods.
LEED for Homes: The LEED for Homes has specific point categories and thresholds that
reward efficient residential design.
Buildings can qualify for four levels of certification.
1. CERTIFIED: 40-49 POINTS
2. SILVER: 50-59 POINTS
3. GOLD: 60-79 POINTS
4. PLATINUM: ABOVE 80 POINTS.
THE PRELIMINARY GOAL FOR 4209 SUPERSTITION IS "PLATINUM".
Pre-Construction design meetings between the Owner, Rater, Designer and Builder
showed this to be an attainable goal. The home is now complete and waiting final
evaluation.
ENERGY STAR RATING
The "Energy Star" certified home must meet strict guidelines set by the EPA. The home is
inspected and rated by a third party inspector trained and certified in rating homes according to
these guidelines.
There are four areas of evaluation one must go through and meet criteria in order to be Energy
Star Certified:
1. Thermal Enclosure: Overall performance of the building
2. HVAC: Overall performance of the Heating, Ventilation and Cooling system.
3. Water Management.
4. Energy efficient lighting and appliance packages.
The "number" used to rate these home is called a "HERS" (Home Energy Rating). The US
Department of Energy has determined that the typical resale home scores at 130, and the typical
standard new home scores at 100.
If your home scores above 100; it is that many percentage points less efficient than the typical
standard new home. If your home scores below 100; it is that many percentage points more
efficient than the standard new home. The goal then, is to score as far below 100 as you can and
still remain within your budget.
Thus, for a home buyer interested in Energy Star and HERS ratings, there are two questions to
ask:
1. Is this home ENERGY STAR certified?---meaning: Has it gone through and passed a
certified third party inspection.
2. What is the HERS rating for the building in question?-- A home with a HERS rating
of 70 will get an ENERGY STAR certification; just as a home with a HERS rating of 59 will get
certification.
THE HOME AT 4209 SUPERSTITION HAS A HERS RATING OF 36. THIS DOES INCLUDE THE

INSULATION:
PERIMETER INSULATION: R-5
CEILING: R-30 SPRAY FOAM AT ROOF DECK
The use of spray foam at this level:
1. Puts all duct work in "conditioned" air space
2. Reduces the air infiltration rate.
Walls: R-27
Using:
1. An R-23 blown in fiberglass--
a. Minimum R-value is 13--blown in also helps minimize air
infiltration.

continuous insulation across all framing members.
